Outcome

The meeting discussed the way forward for the national validation of the revised SADC Regional document of Pesticide Management. These guidelines on pesticide management will support harmonization of pesticide registration in the region. The participants further paved the way for a regional strategy to address Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs). The provided training on the FAO pesticide registration toolkit will support participants in pesticide risk evaluation, assessment and mitigation measures and thus registration, cancellation and restriction of pesticides. Participants have a clear understanding about the benefits and general obligations of the Rotterdam Convention (RC) and the opportunities it offers for parties. Further, it became clear how the RC can assist countries in the 3 steps Identification - Assessment – Mitigation of addressing HHPs by making use of all available information in Annex III, the PIC Circular, the DGDs and ongoing technical assistance related to alternatives. All of this will support DNAs in preparing notifications of final regulatory actions and submission to the RC Secretariat.
