United Nations Environment Programme

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), established in 1972, is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. The work of UNEP is structured around seven broad thematic areas: climate change, disasters and conflicts, ecosystem management, environmental governance, chemicals and waste, resource efficiency, and environment under review.

UNEP, through its different divisions, branches, regional offices and other entities, plays a vital role for the achievement of the objectives of the Rotterdam Convention.

Within the framework of the Rotterdam Convention, the Secretariat cooperates and collaborates with UNEP on a large range of issues to deliver the Convention’s programme of work. The Secretariat also ensures the coordination with UNEP activities in the view of enhancing legal and institutional consistency, sharing of experiences and approaches, and efficiency in the provision of support to Parties.
