The Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade joins in celebrating the International Year of Small Island Developing States 2014.
The International Year of Small Island Development States 2014 was officially launched by UN Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon and UN General Assembly President, John Ashe on the 24th of February. The 24th of February 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the Rotterdam Convention’s entry into force.
The objective of the Rotterdam Convention is to promote shared responsibility and cooperative efforts among Parties in the international trade of certain hazardous chemicals in order to protect human health and the environment from potential harm and to contribute to their environmentally sound use, by facilitating information exchange about their characteristics, by providing for a national decision-making process on their import and export and by disseminating these decisions to Parties.
Of the 51 small island development states (SIDS), twenty-one are currently parties and three are signatories to the Rotterdam Convention.
