Interview, group discussions and field visit for the video shooting and community radio broadcast on pesticide use, alternatives and community empowerment in Guinea Bissau

Outcome

  • Interviewed the General Director of the Agriculture, Mr Carlos Amarante, about the overview of Guinea-Bissau's agricultural situation, national priorities, food and nutritional security aspects as well as the management of pesticides and alternatives to the use of hazardous chemicals in the country.
  • Interviewed and discussed collaboration with the President of KAFO, Mr Sambu Seck, on the role of farmers and the communities in food security, food value chain and alternatives to hazardous chemicals.
  • Visited pesticide storage facilities of Carantaba
  • Visited the licensed pesticide retailer in Bissau and interviewed the seller 
  • Visited informal food market where pesticides are sold, interviewed sellers and raised awareness through the pesticide visual tool “Protect children from pesticides!”
  • Visited rural communities (Binar, Canico Tumana, Djalicunda, Pantufazinho) in the Gabu, Cacheu and Oio Regions and Ponta Novo e Contuboel (Bafatá Region) and raised awareness about pesticides risks in groups discussion, conducted and filmed interviews of farmers’experiences.
  • Visited KAFO Federation facilities for food processing. Interviewed responsible people and filmed all the process.
  • Interviewed farmers involved in the data collection providing information on risks of handling hazardous chemicals without PPE thanks to the support of an enumerator of the Department of Statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Interviewed on a radio programme on the community radio station “Voz de Djalicunda” explaining the objectives of the project, the risks posed by the use of pesticides etc. Interview broadcast in the neighbouring areas and asked live feedback in the community of Bironque after broadcasting.
  • Continued discussion with the DNA the SHPF form, and the possibilities under the article 6 and how to link the data collection at national level to the submission of SHPF proposals in case of incidents.
  • Raised awareness on the risk of pesticide use through the pesticide visual tool “Protect children from pesticides!” in all the group discussions in the rural communities with the help of local facilitators for translation in local languages of the ethnic groups (fula, mandinga etc)
